“Congrats on making it to the Finals”

“sorry that I’m such a dirty player“
I ran the Lonestar 5000 this past weekend, which is the 5K that’s associated with the Congress Avenue Milee and the ever so popular Mighty Texas Dog Walk. Unfortunately, they didn’t have chip timing available, so I don’t know my exact time, but according to the timer on the finish line I finished in about 37:22. I’m too lazy to do real research, but I’m pretty sure that this is my first time finishing a 5K in under 40 minutes. I think that I would’ve finished under 35 minutes, too, but the race didn’t start until 10:40 because of all of the milers and it was already getting super-hot.
My next race is the Keep Austin Weird 5K in late June. I think I’m gonna try for sub-30″.
So I have a new writing gig with some “pals” that I’ve made over at The Big Lead. I’m not gonna link to it because I don’t want my blog commenter and real-life worlds to collide, but if you google “major league jerk”, you’ll be able to find the blog quite easily. I’m the one known as “clown” aka the one who has totally hoodwinked my fellow authors into thinking that I have a passable knowledge of anything sports-related.
I just realized that this post might come up if you google major league jerk. I’m about as cunning as it gets, folks.

Sure, it’s against the Yankees, but still. Sucks the way he went, but that’s a sweet way to be remembered.

Do I have plans for it? Do I really have anything to say? Is anyone interested in what I have to say?
So, you thought I wasted my money when I bought all those shoes? You didn’t think it was a good idea, when I said Marcelina didn’t really need diapers and these Air Max 95’s weren’t gonna be available in my size next week? You made fun of me because I matched my Retro J’s to my t-shirt?
Turns out, the joke is on you.
Last night, Mary Alice and I stayed up later than we usually do because B was going back to her father’s house and we needed to finish her laundry. The house had it’s usual din of noise: the washing and drying machines were running, B was taking a shower and Noggin was on at full blast so Marcelina could hear it.
An aside about the noise: (more…)

I participated in the Capitol 10K yesterday, and I was kind of scared because one, I’m obese, and two, I finished 2nd to last of all males in my previous 10K. I know that a lot more people run the Cap 10K, and my results weren’t going to be that bad, but my pretty putrid results were in the back of my mind.
The conditions during the race were pretty bad, I guess. It was humid and it rained for most of the race. The powers-that-be don’t consider that “optimal running conditions” for some reason. I’m so glad Team Zen hooked me up with a tech shirt, because I know if I had been wearing cotton, it would’ve been a disaster.
I ran with my Team Zen homie, Anjie, and although I probably would’ve finished sooner if I did it truly solo, I think it felt better to push each other. She wanted to flake out on the running a few times, and we would take a lot of walking breaks, but in the end I was still able to blow my previous time out of the water. I shaved 17 minutes off my previous 10K! Now, to most people, 1:22 would be an abomination, but this is a crazy breakthrough for me. I know that if I had done it by myself, it could’ve easily been 1:15, but I don’t care. I’m a part of a team, and I just did what teammates do.
My next race is the Bun Run in two weeks. I’m hoping for a sub 13 min/mi pace. We’ll see.
